Winnipeg's Hidden Gem: Norwood Hotel - Unforgettable Stay!
Okay, buckle up, buttercups, because we're diving headfirst into the delightfully messy experience that is reviewing the Norwood Hotel in Winnipeg. This isn't your clinical, polished review. This is the raw, unfiltered truth, seasoned with a healthy dose of "WTF did I just experience?"
Winnipeg's Hidden Gem: Norwood Hotel - Unforgettable Stay! (Or, "My Brain is Still Processing…")
Let's be honest, "Hidden Gem" is a cliché, right? But with the Norwood, it actually fits. It’s not a gleaming skyscraper, it's got charm, and that's what I'm going to explore in a detailed and utterly disorganized fashion.
Accessibility: The Good (Mostly) and the, Uh… Less Good
Okay, so, accessibility. They say they have facilities for disabled guests. And they have an elevator. So, yay for some access! But, and this is a big but, navigating the hallways and getting to the room felt a little wonky. I didn't use a wheelchair, but I could see it being tricky in a few spots. So, check this: Accessibility is potentially there, but call ahead and really drill them on the specifics, okay? Don’t leave it to chance.
Rooms: Comforts and Quirks (And the Mystery of the Slippers!)
My room! Oh, the room. Full disclosure, I went for the "standard" because, budget. First impressions? Clean. Like, seriously clean. They're clearly on top of cleanliness, which is huge. [ Cleanliness and safety ] The Rooms sanitized between stays made me feel more secure with the Anti-viral cleaning products (good move!).
- The Good: A comfortable bed, Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! (bless), a decent desk, and a massive window that actually opens (fresh air! Hallelujah!). They even had a complimentary bottle of water and tea – I’m a sucker for a cuppa. They had Satellite/cable channels, so good on them for the essentials. The Air conditioning worked like a charm at first, which I was grateful for.
- The Quirks: The slippers, I think there was a miscommunication… none. They were missing, and I’m a slipper kind of guy! Also, the bathroom phone… Why? Is there a call between the toilet and the bedroom I was missing? (I didn't try it, naturally).
- Also available in the rooms: Additional toilet, Bathrobes, Blackout curtains, Carpeting, Closet, Coffee/tea maker, Complimentary tea, Daily housekeeping, Desk, Extra long bed, Free bottled water, Hair dryer, High floor, In-room safe box, Interconnecting room(s) available, Internet access – LAN and wireless, Ironing facilities, Laptop workspace, Linens, Mini bar, Mirror, Non-smoking, On-demand movies, Private bathroom, Reading light, Refrigerator, Safety/security feature, Scale, Seating area, Separate shower/bathtub, Shower, Smoke detector, Socket near the bed, Sofa, Soundproofing, Telephone, Toiletries, Towels, Umbrella, Visual alarm, Wake-up service, Window that opens.
- I loved my room, and by far, was the best thing about the entire stay!
Dining, Drinking, and Snacking: An Adventure (Sometimes Messy)
Right, let's talk food. The Norwood has a few options.
- Restaurants: There's a restaurant (big surprise, right?), and I found myself eating there most of my stay because of the Room service [24-hour] service!
- The Buffet was a real mixed bag. The breakfast buffet, was nothing great, it wasn’t bad, but nothing incredible. The service was friendly, but the presentation could use some serious love. The Breakfast [buffet] felt a bit…corporate. The Asian breakfast looked pretty sad. No hard feelings, it’s just not the kind of place I would like to eat every day to breakfast.
- The A la carte was a surprisingly good option, especially for the dinner, which was excellent and more relaxed. They have a Vegetarian restaurant and Asian cuisine in restaurant which might be a good option if you are looking for some vegetarian things.
- They offer Western breakfast, which is decent, but not memorable.
- They have a Coffee/tea in restaurant, so I did not have to order a coffee on the street.
- Bar: The Bar! Happy hour was a blast, and the bartenders were cool. They know their stuff, and the atmosphere was lively, even the Poolside bar had a very pleasant experience. The wine list was a little limited but had some decent options.
- Snack bar: Never really got to the Snack bar, but i know they are a good offer.
- Additional Dining notes: They offer Bottle of water, which comes in handy.
*The messiest thing about this hotel had to be the buffet. The experience was so frustrating for me, as the staff was not up to the challenges and was underprepared. So, based on my experience, take the Sanitized kitchen and tableware items with a grain of salt, as my stay was not aligned with this.
- I have a feeling that this is going to be a hit or miss, and the experience will differ based on the staff.
Pool, Spa, and Relaxation: The Elusive Chill Zone
Okay, so I was really looking forward to this. The website promised a Spa/sauna, a pool with a view, a place to escape reality, or at least, the daily grind. They claim to have a Spa, Sauna, Steamroom, and Swimming pool [outdoor], but when I got there… Well, let's just say it wasn't exactly the Zen experience I was hoping for. The Swimming pool was okay, nothing special. It had a view alright, but it was the parking lot. It was fine, but not “unforgettable”. I didn't try the Fitness center, as I tend to avoid such places on vacation. I didn't try the Spa, as I didn’t feel it was safe enough.
Service and Conveniences: The Good, the Bad, and the "Huh?"
The Good: The staff were, on the whole, incredibly friendly. Shout-out to the front desk, who were super helpful, and the Doorman was a great touch. Daily housekeeping was impeccable, and the Daily disinfection in common areas made me feel safe. They have a Cashless payment service.
The Bad: There was an issue with my bill – a small thing, but it took a while to sort out. The Air conditioning in public area seems to have a mind of its own. The Airport transfer costs almost half of the price of my stay, which made me reconsider my choice.
The "Huh?": The gift shop had some weird stuff. And I’m not sure what’s the use for Essential condiments in the hotel.
Additional thoughts: They have Business facilities (including a Xerox/fax in business center – hello, 1990s!), and Meeting/banquet facilities, which might be useful if you are looking to do that kind of stuff. The Concierge was okay, but not quite the “magical problem-solver” I'd hoped for. They offer Food delivery!
Additionally, and that’s a plus, they offer Cash withdrawal, Currency exchange, Dry cleaning, Elevator, Facilities for disabled guests/ Invoice provided, Ironing service, Laundry service, Luggage storage, Meetings, Meeting stationery, On-site event hosting, Outdoor venue for special events, Projector/LED display, Safety deposit boxes, Seminars, Shrine, Smoking area, Terrace, Wi-Fi for special events.
For the kids, they offer the Babysitting service, Family/child friendly, Kids facilities, Kids meal.
Things to Do: Exploring Winnipeg (or, "Where's the Adventure?")
Winnipeg itself is a great city. The Norwood is reasonably central, so getting around, if you have a car, is pretty easy. The Car park [free of charge] is a huge plus. They also have a Car park [on-site], Car power charging station, Taxi service, and Valet parking.
- Getting around: Airport transfer, Bicycle parking.
- Things to do: I didn’t use these, I went on foot!
- For special events, they have both Audio-visual equipment for special events and Wi-Fi for special events.
The Bottom Line (Finally!): Book or Bail?
Look, the Norwood Hotel
Escape to Comfort: Salina's BEST Suites Await!Okay, buckle up, buttercup, because this isn’t just an itinerary, it's a goddamn experience – the Norwood Hotel Winnipeg, baby! Get your bingo cards ready because between the dodgy elevators, the surprisingly decent pub grub, and maybe, just maybe, the ghosts (allegedly), we're in for a wild ride.
Norwood Hotel Winnipeg: A Hot Mess Express (A Travel Itinerary)
Day 1: Arrival and Initial Panic
- 1:00 PM: Arrival at Winnipeg. Right, so, I’m coming from… (checks scrappy notebook) …somewhere. Let's just say it involved a delayed flight and a near-death experience with airport coffee. Winnipeg is officially a different country than my home. The airport is surprisingly modern, which is a relief after that coffee.
- 2:00 PM: Check-in at Norwood. Find the Hotel. The cab ride felt… long. Winnipeg is… flat. Seriously, where are the mountains? The Norwood… it’s… well, it’s the Norwood. Exterior wise, I'd say it's "charming". The lobby smells faintly of… old cigarettes and… hope? The check-in guy (bless his heart) looks like he's seen some things. He’s got that weary, Winnipeg-winter-survivor look. Me, I'm probably "Tourist-who-forgot-to-pack-an-umbrella".
- 2:30 PM: The Room Reveal. Okay, let's be real. I asked for a “non-smoking room, with a view if possible”. The view is… of a brick wall. And the room? Carpet that has seen things. But you know what? It's clean-ish. And there’s a mini-fridge! Victory! I feel it: the primal urge to throw my bag onto the bed… and then promptly collapse beside it.
- 3:00 PM: Exploration (Attempted). I try to find the elevator… or find directions to the elevator, which is a feat in itself. After a solid 20 minutes of navigating (possibly haunted) hallways, I finally find the death trap. My first thought: "This is it, this is how I die."
- 3:30 PM: The Pub Call. Can't. Fight. Hunger. Or the siren call of a pub. The Norwood's pub is a cozy haven, which can also mean full of regulars and not so much seating. I order a burger and a local beer. Burger arrives. Surprisingly good, considering the state of the elevators. The beer? Even better. I strike up a conversation with a local named… (checks notes) …Gerry. Gerry tells me about the ghost stories. The Norwood, apparently, is known for them. He swears he once saw… well, I'll leave that for the imagination. But he did point out a few "haunted" areas.
- 6:00 PM: Attempt to find the ice machine. Failed miserably. Resigned to warm water for tonight.
- 7:00 PM: Initial Freak Out. I'm pretty sure I heard a… noise… in the hallway. Probably the wind. Yes, the wind. Definitely not a ghost. Just wind. I mean, maybe a ghost. But a friendly one. Probably.
- 8:00 PM: Burger Coma & Early Night. The burger (and the beer) have won. Bedtime. Praying for a decent night's sleep.
Day 2: Culture, and a Deep Dive into Pub Vibes
- 9:00 AM: Wake Up! (Maybe.) I think I slept. Maybe. My neck hurts. Winnipeg… cold.
- 10:00 AM: Breakfast… at the Hotel? Well, there's no breakfast in the hotel, but there is a Tim Horton's a block away. Coffee, a bagel, and a desperate prayer to the travel gods for a functional day.
- 11:00 AM: Exploring. (Again, Attempted) Okay, time to venture out. I get disoriented easily, but I manage to stumble upon a local park. The crisp air is invigorating.
- 1:00 PM: Lunch at… The Pub. No shame! The pub is my comfort zone now. Today, I brave the "daily special." The waitress remembered my beer order. I feel… seen.
- 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Unraveling the Pub’s Secrets. I spend the whole day at the pub, no shame. Gerry gives me a history lesson about the area. A local comes up and starts regaling us with his life story. The pub becomes this vortex of tales, and the people from the bar know all the ghosts by name. I felt so embraced. And it's at this point, where an experience really kicks in, and it's the pub. The Norwood's pub is the heart and soul of the place. It’s where the regulars gather, where the stories flow freely, and where the bartender knows everyone's name (and probably their secrets). It's a place of community, of shared laughter, and of the kind of genuine connection that you rarely find these days. A place where you can just be yourself. Yes, I did stay at the pub the whole day. Time flies when you're having fun.
- 6:00 PM: Dinner at… (you guessed it) The Pub. I realize that I could happily live out my days here, in perpetual burger-and-beer bliss.
- 7:00 PM: Ghost Hunting (Maybe). Armed with courage (and a slight buzz), I decide to explore the "haunted" areas of the hotel. Found nothing, or maybe I did and choose not to remember. All I know is, I felt like the most intrepid ghost hunter ever.
- 9:00 PM: Final Pub Stint One last beer, one last chat with Gerry, one last glimpse of the life that's not my own.
- 10:00 PM: Stumble back to my room. This time, I almost find the elevator immediately. Progress!
Day 3: Departure & Reflections
- 8:00 AM: Check-Out. The check-out guy is still there. He smiles. Looks like he made it through another night. I give him a tip way bigger than I normally would.
- 8:30 AM: Last Meal at Tim Horton’s.
- 9:00 AM: Departure. Back to the airport. Back to reality. But… I feel a little… changed. I made it out alive. I spent time somewhere I could be welcomed.
- 10:00 AM: Reflection. The Norwood Hotel, my friends, is not a luxury resort. It isn't perfect. But it has something… real. It’s a place full of characters, of life, of stories. And you know what? I wouldn’t trade that for a five-star hotel any day.
So, yeah. Norwood Hotel Winnipeg. It's a bit rough around the edges. But it’s got soul, and it's probably haunted. And I'm already thinking about going back.
